Have you noticed the first line of chapters 18 and 19 in Judges? "In those days Israel had no king." The last verse of the book adds, "people did as they saw fit." It seems that this is connected to the chaos and troubling times that are found in this time in the history of the Hebrews. They had neither God nor man as king. I hope to look into this more. Any thoughts about this?

Hello all! Sue Shadel here.
It stands out to me in today's reading from Judges how little lives of women were valued at that time. The concubine/wife or whatever she was was tossed out to the mob as being expendable.
In contrast Jesus does not hesitate to talk with a woman who is also a despised by the Jews Samaritan. He reveals to her that He is the Messiah and offers to her the Living Water that brings salvation and eternal life in His kingdom. To Jesus no one is expendable.
One other thought to ponder is that I hsve 2 groups of Easter lillies in my yard. One is in my front garden. They are budded but not yet in bloom. However, the lillies that were dug out and tossed in our compost pile last year, are bigger, taller, and in full fragrant bloom. They are definitely doing very well there as opposed to the other more coddled ones. Is there a lesson here? Love to all, Sue
Hey Sue! Thanks for the post.
It is almost surreal how Judges ends with this horrible story of rape, abuse, murder and then to rectify the situation they throw in a little kidnapping and forced marriage. I think the lesson here is found in my question about them not having a king. I love the dramatic ending to the book. The Message puts it like this:
"At that time there was no king in Israel. People did whatever they felt like doing."
Without a king, this is what life looks like. Without the king of kings, our lives lead to chaos. Maybe it would not be as blatantly evil as the stories of Judges, but without God's grace working in our lives, we would all do pretty much whatever we felt like doing and the world would be a pretty rough place.
Ray, I totally agree. Another example of that comes to my mind is "The Sopranos" TV show. I keep finding myself wanting to pray for these Mafia guys. Their lives are about on par with the folks in Judges. It is just so sad and I can see no hope whatever for the outcome of the show. Sue
